Preserving and promoting the Armenian culture for 35 years…
It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that the Sayat Nova Dance Company family announces the passing of its beloved founder, director, and choreographer, Apo Ashjian. Apo passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Apo was SNDC's heart, its guiding light, and its soul. Through his unwavering passion for Armenian dance and culture, he created not just a company, but a home. A place where generations found confidence, purpose, friendship, and pride in who they are.
He had a rare gift—the ability to make a lasting impression on any person that he crossed paths with. He didn’t just teach steps or choreography; he taught meaning. He taught resilience. He taught the importance of carrying our heritage forward with strength and joy. To so many, he was not only a teacher, but a mentor, a role model, and family.
Apo’s unique choreography told stories that words could not—stories of history, identity, and the enduring spirit of our people. And through those stories, he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to live on in every dancer who takes the stage, every tradition that is preserved, and every heart he has touched. By giving his life to something bigger than himself, he encouraged others to also lead a life with purpose.
The loss we feel is immeasurable, but so is the gratitude for having known him, having learned from him, and having been shaped by him. His presence and his passion, will remain woven into the fabric of Sayat Nova Dance Company. His vision and his love will forever remain at the core of all that we do.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and to all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that he has now been reunited in heaven with his lifetime friend and co-founder, Shaghig Palanjian, continuing their bond beyond this life.
We lost our Apo Ashjian. The world lost a leader, an innovator, and a guiding light. Yet his legacy will never fade.
May his memory be eternal.
A steadfastness of spirit,
an everlasting love for heritage,
an inspiring expression of culture.
As part of its rich culture, Armenian folk dancing is a reflection of the life and legacy of the Armenian people. Each dance symbolizes the livelihood, the aspirations, the legends, the celebration of life, and the appreciation of beauty. The company takes its name from the famous 18th century troubadour, Sayat Nova, whose beautiful music and poetry captures the essence of the Armenian soul and spirit.
“Nothing moves me more than performing for a non-Armenian audience, sharing our unique and rich culture with people, and having them understand why we are so proud of who we are.”
— Apo Ashjian, Founder/Director
“Sayat Nova gives our community a sense of unity and strength. It allows Armenians to feel connected to their culture through
the art of dance.”
— Katarena, dancer since 2017
